ABOUT ABOUT

RICHMOND, VA  •  The public is invited to Elegba Folklore Society’s Cultural Center on Saturday, March 22, to attend a Vision Doll Workshop, 10a - 3p. Attendees will go on a journey of self-insight, creativity and focused vision in creating a Vision Doll as a symbol of potential and power for the New Year typified by the emergence of Spring.  Join the widely acclaimed doll maker, Priyah Bhagat, who will guide a ritualized workshop of creativity and visualization and facilitate this intentional doll-making workshop at the time of the Spring Equinox.

Elegba Folklore Society’s Cultural Center is located in the Richmond Arts District at 101 E Broad St.  Complimentary street parking is available.  Light refreshments will be available.  The tuition of $60 includes all the materials except maybe a small item that is meaningful to the participant to include.  No previous doll-making experience is required.

Participants will learn aspects of the history of dolls and gain an understanding of dolls as power objects and tools.  The ancient wisdom of the doll allows a representation of each participant’s vision for the New Year.  Each attendee will create a doll that depicts something about them and their vision.

Aside from being children’s playthings, dolls can be carriers of culture that represent Ancestors or other definitive figures. Often thought to possess magical powers, in some cultures dolls are used in spiritual ceremonies or rites of passage, and they can be active in defining values and identity.
